Seven Session Small Group Reflective Practice Starts March 24th

Reflective practice invites participants to explore questions such as:

  • How do I stay aligned with responsive feeding when families, referral sources, or systems are focused on outcomes?

  • How do I decrease pressure and remain committed to the principles of responsive feeding when working with families?

  • How do I communicate with parents when progress is slow, inconsistent, or different from what they expect?

  • How do cultural values influence feeding expectations, food choices, and definitions of “success”?

  • How do I collaborate effectively with teams that have differing viewpoints of what good feeding intervention looks like?

Structure of Each Week's Session Includes:

  • LEARN & INTEGRATE

    Participants will receive curated articles and resources to support group discussions. Each session begins with a 15-minute learning segment led by Karen Dilfer, MS, OTR/L covering key challenges in feeding therapy, including responsive feeding across settings, navigating pressure around variety and growth, communicating with parents, supporting families through nonlinear progress, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural differences in feeding practices, and regulation and burnout prevention for therapists.

  • REFLECT & EXPLORE

    Following the didactic portion, participants will engage in live reflective discussion grounded in their own clinical experiences and integrating course readings and resources. Topics will include remaining true to the principles of responsive feeding across a variety of settings, navigating caregiver expectations around variety, nutrition, and "normal" eating, balancing medical, developmental, and relational priorities in family-centered care, and managing fatigue while adopting self-care practices for continued health and wellbeing.

Instructors

Founder and Senior Instructor Karen Dilfer, MS, OTR/L

Karen Dilfer is an occupational therapist, feeding specialist, and food enthusiast. She has a strong pediatric background and loves to help children with motor, sensory, and mealtime challenges. A Chicago native, Karen enjoys discovering new restaurants and cooking with friends and family. She is a founding member of the Chicago Feeding Group, a non profit organization that seeks to support parents and professions who work with children who struggle to eat. Karen was recently featured in the Chicago Tribune. Karen has a bachelor of science degree from Calvin College and a master’s of science degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She is Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) trained and has also completed post-graduate education in Sensory Integration. Karen trained under Marsha Dunn Klein at Mealtime Connections, LLC, in Tucson, Arizona. Karen is a contributing member to the Get Permission team and regularly teaches Get Permission workshops and webinars. Cancellations

Cancellations must be in writing. We are unable to issue a refund after 3/23/2026. If the Get Permission Institute should need to remove course content for any reason, course fees will be refunded or transferred to another course at the discretion of the participant.
