Using Tools Responsively in Pediatric Feeding Therapy

Course Description

Many pediatric feeding therapists utilize tools of various kinds in treatment of children who have pediatric feeding challenges. Marsha will share how to approach tool use within a framework of partnership with children and their parents and describe a communication-based, cue-based, and responsive approach to therapeutic interactions. She will discuss concepts of responsive guidance and responsive opportunities contrasted with use of tools within protocols. Individualized guidelines for tool usage, including toothbrushes, will be offered.  A Get Permission Tool Guidance handout will be included. 

In this 2-hour webinar, you will learn to:

  • Define principles of Get Permission Approach that guide the responsive usage of therapeutic tools

  • Understand concepts of a responsive opportunity and responsive guidance

  • Use tools in therapy while maintaining a responsive feeding approach

  • Support toothbrushing responsively

  • Help families understand appropriate use of tools in feeding therapy

Marsha is a pediatric occupational therapist who has specialized in pediatric feeding for more than 50 years. She has co-authored Pre-Feeding Skills, First Edition, Pre-Feeding Skills: Second Edition, Mealtime Participation Guide, and Homemade Blended Formula with Suzanne Evans Morris, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. She co-authored Feeding and Nutrition for the Child with Special Needs with Tracy Delaney. Her newest book is Anxious Eaters, Anxious Mealtimes: Practical and Compassionate Strategies for Mealtime Peace. Marsha presents nationally and internationally. She is a food celebrator and is passionate about supporting children and their families.
